When a monster respawns it can roll a skull rank (White, Red or Black). Elites are tougher but drop better loot and more experience.

What are elite monsters?
When a monster spawns, it has a chance to spawn as an elite. Elite monsters have more health and deal more damage, but drop better loot and more experience.
Elite ranks
Elite monsters come in several ranks of increasing difficulty. The tougher the rank, the greater the reward. You can recognise them by their name and appearance in-game.
Stay alert. An elite monster can catch you off guard. Keep potions ready and be prepared to run.
